JoJo walked into class on Friday excited to learn the last part of the routine. In honor of the fact that it was finally February—Valentine’s month!—JoJo had dressed in red, white, and pink.

As she dropped off her things in her cubby, Bahi called out to her from the other side of the break room. “Great minds think alike, JoJo,” Bahi said, grinning and gesturing to her own red-and-pink outfit.

“Well, it is officially February now!” JoJo exclaimed, smiling back.

“Aw, I wish I had gotten the memo to dress all festive!” Bree joked. “But my shirt is pink, so that kind of counts, right?”

“Bree, maybe you should worry less about what you’re wearing and more about your dancing!” Belle snapped before stomping out of the break room. Bree and Bahi exchanged uncertain glances and then headed out after her.

“See you out there, JoJo,” Bahi said. But all the enthusiasm was gone from her voice.

JoJo sighed and prepared herself for whatever the day’s class would bring.

The dancers spent the first half of the class broken into smaller groups again, but this time Roberta changed the groups around several times to mix things up. JoJo had to work with Belle just once, but luckily it was for a brief time, and Belle focused on dancing and didn’t say anything mean. Still, JoJo was relieved to switch partners. She had a hard time relaxing around Belle, though she enjoyed working with all the other dancers. She realized she could learn a little something from each of them and hoped that each of them felt as if they learned a little something from her.

“Maybe try raising your left hand after the shuffle like you did the first time,” JoJo was saying to Bahi, whom she was currently partnered with. “That looked really good.”

“Like this?” Bahi executed a few steps while JoJo watched. “Yeah, you’re right, that feels better. Thanks!”

“No problem!” JoJo walked over to Bahi. “Now let’s see if we can—”

Just then, the sound of Belle’s laughter rang through the room. Most of the dancers stopped what they were doing and looked over to where Belle was practicing with Jamilla and Emily, one of the other ballerinas.

“Oh, sorry,” Belle said when she realized all eyes were on her. “I didn’t mean to laugh so loud. But that was just so funny!”

From the look on Emily’s face, JoJo could tell that Emily had not been trying to be funny. Belle was making fun of her. Roberta walked to the front of the room and briskly announced that the groups were changing. JoJo ended up partnered with Bree and Lindsay, both of whom she’d already been partnered with earlier.

“Ugh!” Lindsay sighed in frustration. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me this afternoon! Maybe I really don’t belong in this class!”

“Of course you belong here!” JoJo said firmly. She wondered if Belle had made Lindsay feel that way. “You were doing it perfectly earlier. Just take a deep breath and try again. It’ll come back to you.”

“Yeah, you got this!” Bree cheered.
